I have a friend who used to tell me that he dreamt of tracking sex traffickers and busting through doors to carry out the girls and boys that were enslaved into a more freeing life.
I have another friend who feels called to assist the homeless in more extravagant ways by building homes for them, teaching them how to begin a career, and even taking them on job interviews.
One of my best friends is passionate about teaching first-year or first-generation college students how to be successful in a four-year university so that they can feel confident in their education and future.
And I have another friend who (with his wife) have taken in and loved many foster kids, hoping to be a light in the life of a child who is experiencing extreme darkness in their childhood.
There are many good people passionate about changing their world.
Notice how I said “their” world, not “the” world. There are over 7 billion people on this planet who have created most – if not all – of their own problems. It can often seem like the school shootings, the pollution, the injustice, political drama, etc. are too big to affect change.
But when you focus on changing your world, the world around you, you create a domino effect in the way things are.
Martin Luther King Jr. said “Your life begins to end the moment you start being silent about the things that matter.”
Apathy is the silent killer of causes and the silent supporter of evil. It has the highest rate of decay is the most effective precursor to hate. What you allow is what will continue. And what you spend your money on is the type of world you’re allowing to exist.
The Bible has a lot to say about fighting for causes…
Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.Isaiah 1:7
Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.Proverbs 31:8-9
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another…Galatians 5:13-16
There are so many worthy causes to jump into that – for me – it can feel like an avalanche of problems. It can be discouraging to look at the big, global scene and feel a loss for where to begin.
Because I care so deeply about fighting to make a better world and loving the people that live in it, I want to help you do the same! Below, I’m going to list some organizations that are fighting for good. I want to encourage you to stretch your legs past serving on a Sunday morning. For us, Sunday is always coming. Our doors are open every week except the last one of the year. But these people are living their 365 days in some of the worst tragedies and hardships you can imagine.
Feel free to pick one of these organizations and jump in head first! Get your kids excited about helping other kids! Find organizations that will accomplish something you are passionate about – even if they’re not on this list!
In changing their world, we just might change ours too.
